Epistaxis / Bleeding From Nose

EPISTAXIS or bleeding from the nose, is frightening to anyone who has experienced it. It is common among children during winters and summer months due to dryness of air and crusting over the nasal septum. Treatment requires local lubrication and pressure. Major bleeds occur after trauma or in adults. Commonly associated with hypertension, a bleed can arise from either the anterior ethmoidal artery or the sphenopalatine artery branch. This will require nasal endoscopic evaluation and cauterization or clipping of the offending vessel as a one time procedure. This procedure is known as Sphenopalatine Artery Ligation.
