Nasal Polyps

Nasal polyps are grape like masses that arise from the mucosal lining (inner lining) of nose and sinuses. They occur as a result of long-term inflammation due to recurring infection, allergies, drug sensitivity or certain immune disorders.

What symptoms are shown by patients who have nasal polyps?

These are the most common symptoms reported by patients who have nasal polyps:

  • Runny nose
  • Persistent stuffiness of nose
  • Decreased or absent sense of smell
  • Loss of sense of taste
  • Facial pain or headache
  • Pain in your upper teeth
  • A sense of pressure over your forehead and face
  • Snoring
  • Itching around your eyes

Will any tests be required to confirm the presence of nasal polyps?

A nasal examination, nasal endoscopy and high resolution CT scans can confirm the presence of nasal polyps.

What treatment options are available for nasal polyps?

Depending upon the severity of disease and investigations, patients may need to undergo Endoscopic Sinus Surgery. Post-surgery, regular follow up is necessary as polyps are known to recur and immediate intervention is helpful to prevent recurrence.
