Stapedotomy

Why is this surgery performed?

Stapedotomy is a surgical treatment for patients experiencing hearing loss due to fixation or immobility of the middle ear bone called Stapes. This condition is known as Otosclerosis. It tends to occur more often in women, with the incidence being higher in southern India. Though the exact cause is still unknown, it is known to run in families.

This surgery involves various stages such as reflecting and folding the ear drum, after which a part of the bone is removed to expose the footplate of Stapes and a control hole is made to expose the inner ear. Additionally, the superstructure of stapes needs to be removed and a communication is established between the incus and the hole that was previously created using a piston.
